The European bet against surveillance AI

On June 30, 2026, Proton — the Swiss company behind ProtonMail and ProtonVPN — launched Lumo 2.0, the biggest upgrade to its AI assistant since the original release. Lumo 2.0 arrives with a proposition none of the major US competitors can replicate: zero-access encryption — not even Proton can read users conversations.

"Users no longer need to choose between powerful AI capabilities and meaningful privacy protections," said Andy Yen, Proton founder and CEO, former CERN physicist. Lumo is open source, hosted in European datacenters, and operates under Swiss data protection law — not subject to US executive orders or American data collection requests.

What changed in 2.0

The performance leap is significant: Lumo 2.0 Max scores 240% higher than predecessor Lumo 1.4 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, while the lighter Lumo 2.0 Lite registers 127% improvement. New capabilities include image recognition and generation, web search with citations, user-controlled persistent memory, and "Custom Lumos" — personalized assistants that retain instructions in memory without breaking the encryption promise.

Two models are available: Lite for fast everyday use and Max for demanding work, with a 2x larger context window. Speed improved 76% for everyday queries, though complex tasks still take considerable time.

The performance caveat

Lumo 2.0 is not at frontier-model level. Per TechRadar, the model scores 51 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index — while GPT-5.6 Sol Max reaches 59 and Claude Fable 5 reaches 60. The underlying tech is Qwen 3.5 and GLM 5.2, per Proton own privacy policy, whose scores are consistent with the reported numbers. For everyday tasks the gap is imperceptible to most users. For cutting-edge scientific reasoning or long-horizon tasks, the difference remains.

The enterprise angle

Lumo for Business is already used by thousands of companies, per Proton. Legal, financial, and healthcare teams concerned about leaking confidential information to US-jurisdiction infrastructure have a clear proposition: AI without becoming training data for someone else model.
